The Madeline Shawl

I learned to knit over 8 years ago and immediately started making my own patterns. In the beginning, I just wanted to knit seamless sweaters and there weren’t a lot of patterns out there, so I made my own with the help of Barbara Walker and Elizabeth Zimmermann. All my calculations were done by hand and my directions were written so that I could understand them, but I didn’t expect anyone else to.

Then two years ago my best friend decided to help me turn my patterns into a business and gave me a laptop. It’s taken me this long to learn how to use it! But seriously, I’ve never been particularly computer savvy and going without a computer for seven years really set me back. With the help of Ravelry and Craftsy I learned how to write a pattern that looks (almost) as good as those by my favorite indie designers.

Madeline Shawl is the Beta test of my pattern writing skills. From creating charts (and making new symbols) to photography and layout, this pattern has given me a new appreciation for all the work that goes into making a beautiful pattern. It’s been a steep learning curve, but I’ve enjoyed every minute! I hope you enjoy knitting this pattern as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Happy knitting!
