Bianca Pullover

The Bianca Pullover is my new sweater design for the Fall/Winter 2017 issue of knit.wear. Worked in super soft and bulky Jo Sharp Silk Road Ultra yarn, the pullover features an allover cable pattern on the boxy body, which is balanced by narrow stockinette sleeves. Short row shaping on the drop shoulders prevents baggy, bunchy underarms, and side slits at the hem create a narrower silhouette at the hip.

The inspiration for this design came while I was watching Star Wars Episode V; The Empire Strikes Back, for the millionth time. The movie opens with the rebel base on the planet Hoth, a bleak landscape of snow and ice. Consequently, the rebels’ camouflage uniforms are all white. To fit the Winter Whites theme in this issue I imagined a sweater that Princess Leia would wear on Hoth, warm and stylish, but also practical and utilitarian.

The round cable pattern on the body of the sweater is a nod to the famous side buns hairstyle Princess Leia wore in Episode IV; A new Hope. The cable pattern itself is easy to work, although it requires two cable needles.
